Welcome to the ARCHIVED public goatBSE website
Written by Alex Bossers

Welcome to the NOW ARCHIVED public goat TSE website. It is continued by the EMIDA goat-TSE-FREE project and it's website can be found here.

The site has grown from an initial NeuroPrion TSEgoat initiative and an EU funded STREP goatBSE (2006-2012) into a general goat TSE related resource. This will continue to be by the new EMIDA follow-up project with focus on goatTSE-FREE by selective breeding.
On this site you can see what our main goals are and how we organised the projects in global lines. Public progress reports of the EU projects will be posted here as well as any other dissemination activities we participate in. Currently the site has its major focus on science but during the project we will try to add more content for other stakeholders and other languages. Since November 2009, we have translated information in several other languages (will be expanded). Where a national flag symbol is shown, a translation is available through a highlighted weblink.

Presently available languages for some articles: ital0001 dutch flag greek flag german flag spanish flag french_flag

Large field study of Corbiere et al., on scrapie resistance.
Written by Jan Langeveld

The codon 222K but also the 154H and 211Q alleles confer resistance to scrapie in the field. The largest study ever (301 scrapie cases in five herds with a total of 1343 goats) has been performed in France (see paper of Corbiere et al., 2012; PrP associated resistance to scrapie in 1 five highly infected goat herds; J. Gen Virol.). The 154H, 211Q and 222K PrP polymorphic alleles were associated with resistance to scrapie.

The Prion 2012 congress has reached a final program. Both for the main congress as well as for the Animal TSEs workshop, that now is being held for the 5th time as a kind  of satellite program preceding the large international prion congress Prion 2012, held annually in the Prion #### series. Prion 2012 will be held in Amsterdam from May 9 - 12. For registration and more information you can find the link under the green logo on our home page.
Animal TSEs workshop Prion2012, 12April2012 status

Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:11
For the fifth time the annual prion congress will be preceded by a workshop focusing on natural TSEs in animals, thus to present and update the status of knowledge on field TSEs and policies around prevention and safety. The registration is still open, and also on-site one can still register, go to www.prion2012.com. There one also will find the program of the workshop, as well of course the final congress program. The number of attendants is higher than ever before, indicating that this concept is fullfilling an important need for information and contacts. We as GoatBSE moderators of this event are very pleased. This year again Colorado State University in Fort Collins is assisting in the organisation and Dr. Mark Zabel is again the contact person ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Resistance gene confirmed for goats in scrapie challenge
Written by Jan Langeveld

Our Italian colleagues in the GoatBSE project have further evidence for the scrapie resistance contribution of the 222K allele of prion protein PrP. They inoculated goats intracerebrally with brain tissue of a locally sourced wild type scrapie infected goat. Five wildtypes and five heterozygous Q222K PrP carriers were challenged. The five wildtype animals died after 24 months, while the other four were alive and apparently healthy up to the end of the study at 4.5 years post-challenge. Find the details in the article in Veterinary Research 2012, 42:8. (http://www.veterinaryresearch.org/content/pdf/1297-9716-43-8.pdf).
