State-of-the-art review of goat TSE in the European Union, with special emphasis on PRNP genetics and epidemiology. Vet. Res. 40: 48, G. Vaccari et al. (2009), freely available.
This summer (2009) saw the publication of an up-to-date overview that provides all the current data on transmissible spongiform encephalopthies (TSEs) in goats. TSEs are also known by the short name of prion diseases. In ruminants these diseases include mad cow disease (BSE) in cattle, scrapie in sheep and goats, and in North America, chronic wasting disease in deer. Here we present a short description of the main information provided in this article, which was published by our group in Veterinary Research, 2009, 40:48 under the European-funded GoatBSE and TSEgoat projects.

On November 2009, an opinion of EFSA was published on TSE resistance in goat, with attention for whole Europe. Title: "Scientific Opinion on genetic TSE resistance in goats in all European Union Member States". Published on line: EFSA Journal 2009; 7(11):1371
Again, several GoatBSE consortium members have contributed to this opnion written by the Panel of Biological Hazards.

Interesting outcome of the existing scientific progress is, that there is reason for optimism to have a genetical programme available in the future to eradicate TSEs in goats.
